As Hank Williams Jr. tells it to the Tennessean newspaper, "The heavenly band is now complete".
Don Helms, legendary steel guitar stylist and original member of Hank Williams' Drifting Cowboys, has passed away at 81. Mr. Helms died after suffering a heart attack at Skylor Medical Center on August 11th. He was the last surviving member of the Hank Sr. band.
At age fifteen, Mr. Helms had ordered his first steel guitar from a Sears mail order catalog, even though the rustic home he grew up in had no electricity to plug it in. He played the instrument on an upturned washboard, which allowed the guitar to be heard through its resonance.
The signature style of Mr. Helms' playing could be heard on Hank Sr hits like "Your Cheatin' Heart" and "I Can't Help it (If I'm Still in Love with You), plus numerous Country classics by other artists such as Patsy Cline's "Walking After Midnight" and Stonewall Jackson's "Waterloo".
