Jessica Simpson apologised to the audience at a Rascal Flatts show in Grand Rapids, Michigan, after a catalogue of errors in her set.
The singer was reported to have forgotten lyrics, mumbled through songs and started at least one number over after making errors in her vocal.
Before her last song, Jessica told the audience she sometimes feels like quitting and appeared to be wiping away tears as she exited the stage.
"Jessica had an off night", one of her spokespeople commented later. "She's a perfectionist and wanted to start some of the songs over. She always wants to give her best performance to her fans."
The incident mirrored Jessica's performance at Washington's Kennedy Center in 2006 when, in a tribute to Dolly Parton, Jessica forgot lyrics, mumbled in parts of the song and fled the stage in tears.
On that occasion, Jessica's PR people blamed nerves, saying Dolly was one of Jessica's idols and this put pressure on her that caused her to stumble in her vocal.
The bungled performance was excised from the TV broadcast of the event and replacesd with a second attempt at the song, which Jessica recorded after the audience had left.
